the tattoo process

For large projects, there is a process.

It is a commitment. It will take time and patience.

The result will be worth it.

For small projects, preparation and timing is not as much a concern. But, for large projects, this commissioning is a tremendous commitment that requires preparation, patience, and time to achieve the desirable result. Large projects can range from 4-6 sessions, or exceed 6. The tattoo process explanation describes how a project will work.

THE CONSULTATION

First, the consultation. Discussion of who, what, when, where, why, and how. This is where all questions are answered. No matter the size of the project, small or large, the consultation will ensure the client and tattooer communicate the proper vision to execute a pleasing composition.

session 0:
the FITTING

This session is for large projects with several sessions. The purpose of this fitting session is to collaborate with the client prior to the initial outline session. Session 0 will allow the client and tattooer to see placement of images prior to tattoo day, to visually make adjustments to composition, in order to be fully prepared for Session 1: Outlining day.

session 1:
the outline

This session will be a lot of prep work before the tattoo machine even starts buzzing. Stencils will be placed on skin. There will be freehand drawing on skin as well to make connections and alter what is needed to tie images together. Once stencil and freehand work is complete and approved, then comes outlining with the tattoo machine.

session2: shading with limited color

This session will be the beginning of seeing life in the image. The one-dimensional outline will start taking a dimensional shape with contrast, shadow, and depth. Depending on the size of the commissioned piece, some color may also be introduced to the composition.

session 3: color

This session is really when life in the composition arrives, emerging a beautiful aesthetic timeless piece of living art. Color will be introduced to the total composition, blending of shadow and color will be performed during this session. Once this session is complete, the piece should look nearly finished...and the clients mind should be blown!

session 4: color saturation; finishing touches

This final session will include color saturation through blending existing color with new color transitionary color; a blending of colors that will create a deeper and sophisticated aesthetic. This session will also provide the finishing touches of lights and darks wherever needed in creating deep and beautiful contrasts.
